Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900's. Reiki is administered by "laying on hands". The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words- Rei and Ki. "Rei" means universal, higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness. Rei knows the cause of all problems and how to heal them. The word "Ki" (the same as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Ti or Ki in Hawaiian), means life energy, vital force or universal life force. Ki is the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts and spiritual life. As long as something is alive, it has life energy circulating through it and surrounding it.  When your life energy is low or there is a restriction in its flow, you are more vulnerable to illness.
"It is the All-Consciousness called Rei that guides the life energy called Ki in the practice of Reiki"

How It Works
In the life force energy of Reiki, the person who is a Reiki healer has had her body's energy channels opened and cleared of obstructions by the Reiki attunements. The process of attunement or initiation is what sets Reiki apart from the other forms of laying on of hands or touch healing. Each degree's attunements increase the positive power of the healer's ability to channel Ki.

A Healing Session
In a healing session, the recipient is in a comfortable position, lying or sitting. The recipient's energy field is first scanned from head to toe to check for imbalances. The healer's hands are then placed in positions on or near the recipient's head, neck, chest, abdomen, hips, elbows, hands, knees, back (optional) and feet for the channeling of energy.  To integrate and complete the healing, the recipient's energy field is grounded through the feet.

Side Effects
Recipients may feel light-headed at the completion of a session for as long as half an hour. A pleasant and enjoyable feeling of relaxation can last for up to three days. Some people begin a physical detoxification after a healing session. This is a sign that the body’s healing processes are working. These effects are short-term and the end results are great!

Reiki

Karuna Reiki
Karuna is a Sanskrit word and is used in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is translated to mean any action that is taken to diminish the suffering of others, or as "compassionate action." Karuna Reiki is often represented by the ancient Goddess of compassion, Kuan Yin. As you develop Karuna in yourself, you are not only helping others, but you also become more receptive to the Karuna that is being sent by all enlightened beings. Thus your healing is quickened as well.
